Expand your horizons! China is the most populous nation in the world with 1.28 billion people, that is, one fifth of the world's population. Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world and one of the top five working languages of the United Nations.
As the world's second largest economy in purchasing power and third largest trading nation, China has particularly important regional significance to Australia. In 2005, China accounted for around one quarter of the world's economic growth and during the past five years China has been the single largest contributor to global growth. Australia maintains a strong trading relationship with China which provides graduates with Chinese language and cultural skills strong job prospects with a broad range of career opportunities in many professional fields.
This major, which can be taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts (Languages and Asian Cultures), will provide you a high level of both spoken and written literacy in Chinese (Mandarin). You will explore many aspects of the social frameworks, political structures and religions of Chinese culture. To enhance your learning experience, you may take a semester abroad at one of our exchange universities in China or Taiwan.
