Beijing Foreign Studies University is a nationwide key university directly supervised by Educational Ministry. It has developed into a multi-lingual, multi-discipline, and poly-stratificational foreign language university, whose aim is to train composite, multi-lingual and high-quality foreign language personnel.
International Exchange Institute originated in early times as Chinese Language Office and Guowen Section. In October 1980 the Chinese Training Division for Foreign Students was founded; in September1984 it was merged into Chinese Language Office and was named Chinese Language Division. September 1985 saw the setting-up of CFL Teaching Major and the founding of Chinese Language Department, on approval by Educational Ministry.
November 1992 saw the founding of International Exchange Institute with a four-year BA program for foreign students. The major tasks this new IEI has assumed are: teaching public Chinese to students from foreign language majors at BFSU; teaching Chinese students on CFL Teaching Major and MA program; and teaching Chinese to foreign students on BA and MA programs, and non-degree programs.
There are five pedagogical units at IEI: Chinese Department (in charge of teaching Chinese students on CFL Teaching Major and students on MA program, and teaching public Chinese at BFSU); Department of Degree Programs (in charge of teaching Chinese to foreign students on the four-year BA program); Department of Non-Degree Programs (in charge of long-term and short-term Chinese training programs for foreign students); Department of Special Programs (e.g. the Sino-European junior managers’ training program, and others); Foreign Languages Office( in charge of teaching English and Sino-Japanese translation to foreign students).
