I. A Brief History
Teaching Chinese as a second language has a history of more than 50 years in Peking University. In 1952, the Chinese program for overseas students was set up in Peking University. It is the first program exclusively for overseas students who wanted to study Chinese as a second language. In 1961, the General Chinese Language Teaching & Research Section, which was affiliated to the Office for Overseas Students, was founded on the basis of this program. In the early years during the Cultural Revolution, Peking University stopped enrollment of overseas students until 1973 when it took the lead in the country to resume. Since China opened to the outside world, there has been an increasing interest in China and Chinese and a “Chinese craze” has appeared recently. Teaching Chinese as second language has attracted attention from the government, education authorities and acedemics and become a “a special subject”.
Peking University established the Centre of Chinese for Overseas Students in 1984, the first of its kind among schools and universities in the country. Based on the centre, the School of Overseas Education was established in 1995 which is composed of the centre and the Office for Overseas Students. On 29th June 2002, SCASL was founded with the purpose of setting up a larger platform for the teaching of Chinese to overseas students. In 2003, the school became a “National Base for Teaching Chinese as A Second Language” after assessment of the Ministry of Education. This proves again the leading role of Peking University in teaching Chinese as a second language in China. +86-10-62751246 NO. 5 Yiheyuan Road Haidian District Beijing, 100871 China Fax Fax: 86-10-62757249 Phone Phone: +86-10-62751246 Tuition charges Tuition fees: Please check website for details.
