School of Chinese as a Second Language
Since 1952, Peking University has been accepting foreign students; it is the university with the longest history in teaching Chinese language to foreign students in new China. On 29th June 2002, the School of Chinese as a Second Language (SCASL) of Peking University was established; it signified a new chapter of Peking University in teaching Chinese language as a second language.
As a special institution for Chinese language studies, SCASL is committed to the teaching of Chinese to overseas students and introduction of China and Chinese culture. With joint efforts of the departments concerned, the school has established a system in teaching and research with an orientation of teaching Chinese as a second language.
SCASL has three levels in management, which are the school, teaching and research sections and teaching group. Within the school, there are five Chinese language teaching and research sections, which are Intensive Chinese Reading, Audio-visual and Spoken Chinese, Selective Courses, Foundation Courses, and Postgraduate Courses. With improved teaching facilities, efficient education management, well-equipped facilities and environment and high-class teaching standard, the school has won reputation from students of both home and abroad.

 I. A Brief History
Teaching Chinese as a second language has a history of more than 50 years in Peking University. In 1952, the Chinese program for overseas students was set up in Peking University. It is the first program exclusively for overseas students who wanted to study Chinese as a second language. In 1961, the General Chinese Language Teaching & Research Section, which was affiliated to the Office for Overseas Students, was founded on the basis of this program. In the early years during the Cultural Revolution, Peking University stopped enrollment of overseas students until 1973 when it took the lead in the country to resume. Since China opened to the outside world, there has been an increasing interest in China and Chinese and a “Chinese craze” has appeared recently. Teaching Chinese as second language has attracted attention from the government, education authorities and acedemics and become a “a special subject”.
Peking University established the Centre of Chinese for Overseas Students in 1984, the first of its kind among schools and universities in the country. Based on the centre, the School of Overseas Education was established in 1995 which is composed of the centre and the Office for Overseas Students. On 29th June 2002, SCASL was founded with the purpose of setting up a larger platform for the teaching of Chinese to overseas students. In 2003, the school became a “National Base for Teaching Chinese as A Second Language” after assessment of the Ministry of Education. This proves  again the leading role of Peking University in teaching Chinese as a second language in China.
