CHIN 100 Introduction to Chinese Conversation Summer Description: Introduction to spoken Mandarin Chinese, with emphasis on vocabulary development, use of common phrases and sentences, and culturally appropriate language at beginning levels. Conducted primarily in Chinese. Units: (3) CHIN 101 Fundamental Chinese-A Spring, Fall Description: Chinese 101 is designed for non-native speakers of Chinese. Development of listening and reading comprehension and speaking. Introduction of writing and development of cultural awareness to communicate on a basic level. Conducted primarily in Chinese. Units: (5) CHIN 102 Fundamental Chinese-B Spring Description: Prerequisite: Chinese 101 or equivalent. Chinese 102 is designed for non-native speakers of Chinese. Continued development of listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing to communicate on a basic level. Conducted primarily in Chinese. Units: (5) CHIN 201 Mandarin Chinese for Chinese Speakers-A Fall Description: Prerequisites: elementary high oral competency, able to read and write at least 500 characters or consent of the instructor. The course will expand learners’ oral competencies and will develop their reading and writing up to 800 characters. Conducted primarily in Chinese. Units: (3) CHIN 202 Mandarin Chinese for Chinese Speakers-B Spring Description: Prerequisites: elementary high oral competency, able to read and write at least 800 characters or consent of the instructor. The course will expand learners’ oral competencies and will develop their reading and writing up to 1200 characters. Conducted primarily on Chinese. Units: (3) 204 Intermediate Chinese – A Description: Prerequisite: Chinese 203 or equivalent. Continue development of students’ communicative competence in Mandarin Chinese with a focus on listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. Emphasis on vocabulary building and developing grammatical accuracy. Conducted in Chinese. Units: (3) CHIN 225 Business Chinese Description: Prerequisites: Chinese 102 or the equivalent. Chinese 225 Business Chinese is an intermediate level language course designed for students interested in doing business in Chinese-speaking areas. The course reinforces listening, speaking, reading, and writing competencies while developing vocabulary specifically needed for doing business in a Chinese-speaking setting. CHIN 299 Directed Study Spring, Fall Description: Prerequisites: Chinese 102 or equivalent. Supervised study projects in Chinese language or literature to be taken with consent of instructor and department chair. May be repeated for credit. Policy information and form . Units: (1-3) CHIN 310 Mandarin Chinese in the Business World Spring, Fall Description: Prerequisites: intermediate low competency in reading, writing, and speaking of Mandarin Chinese. (Testing may be required.) Designed to give students a working knowledge of oral and written Mandarin Chinese business language. Emphasis on cultural, social, and economic contexts of business procedures; business correspondence, conversation between business partners, and the language of advertising. Conducted in Chinese. Units: (3) CHIN 311 Mandarin Chinese for International Business Spring, Fall Description: Prerequisites: intermediate middle competency in reading, writing and speaking of Mandarin Chinese. (Testing may be required.) Designed to expand students’ vocabulary, reading comprehension and oral and written analysis of materials dealing with cultural, social, economic and political realities in the Chinese-speaking business world. Overview of the Chinese economy, major trade relations and business practices. Conducted in Chinese. Units: (3) CHIN 315 Introduction to Chinese Civilization Spring, Fall Description: Prerequisites: intermediate high competency in reading, writing, and speaking Mandarin Chinese; Chinese 202 or equivalent. (Testing may be required.) The social, intellectual and artistic heritage of Chinese civilization. Reading and discussion of characteristics of Chinese civilization while strengthening linguistic facility in Mandarin Chinese. Conducted in Chinese Units: (3) CHIN 325 Contemporary Chinese Culture Spring, Fall Description: Prerequisites: intermediate high competency in reading, writing, and speaking Mandarin Chinese; Chinese 202 or equivalent. Testing may be required. Reading and discussion to develop understanding of the social, political, economic and intellectual problems, trends and issues of present-day China while strengthening linguistic ability in Mandarin Chinese. Conducted in Chinese. Units: (3) MLNG 495 Internship in Foreign Languages Spring, Fall, Summer Description: Prerequisites: the 310 and 311 course in the appropriate language and consent of instructor. Supervised field experience in multinational businesses locally or abroad. Daily use of a foreign language on the job and concurrent enrollment in a College of Business internship are required. Credit/No Credit Course. Units: (3) MLNG 499 Independent Study Spring, Fall, Summer Description: Prerequisites: Supervised projects in Chinese language or literature to be taken with consent of instructor and department chair. May be repeated for credit. Before registering, the student must have the topic approved by the supervising faculty member and the MLL Department Chair.
