CHIN 111 - Elementary Chinese I
Elementary Chinese I Fall. Skill Area III Open only to students with one year or less of high school study. Basic sounds and structure patterns of Mandarin-Chinese are established through a direct audio-lingual approach.
CHIN 112 - Elementary Chinese II
Elementary Chinese II Spring. Skill Area III Prereq.: CHIN 111 or equivalent (normally, two years high school study). No credit given to students with previous credit for more advanced course work in Chinese except by permission of the department chair. A continuation of CHIN 111.
CHIN 125 - Intermediate Chinese I
Intermediate Chinese I Fall. Skill Area III [I] Prereq.: One year of college Chinese or equivalent. Further work on the patterns of Chinese structure with readings and conversation in the language. No credit will be given to students with previous credit for more advanced course work in Chinese except by permission of the department chair.
CHIN 126 - Intermediate Chinese II
Intermediate Chinese II Spring. Skill Area III [I] Prereq.: CHIN 125. A continuation of CHIN 125. No credit will be given to students with previous credit for more advanced course work in Chinese except by permission of the department chair.
CHIN 225 - Intermediate Chinese III
Intermediate Chinese III Fall. Skill Area III [I] Prereq.: CHIN 125 or 126, or permission of instructor. Designed to help students improve speaking skills through discussion of Chinese contemporary texts. Taught in Chinese.
CHIN 226 - Intermediate Chinese IV
Intermediate Chinese IV Spring. Skill Area III [I] Prereq.: CHIN 125 or 126, or permission of instructor. Designed to help students improve writing skills by means of frequent composition in Chinese. Taught in Chinese.
CHIN 261 - Business Chinese
Business Chinese Irregular. Skill Area III [I] Formerly CHIN 410. Prereq.: CHIN 126 or permission of instructor. Development of oral and written skills needed for conducting business in the Chinese language. Study of cultural attitudes of Chinese business people. Taught in Chinese.
CHIN 304 - Topics in Chinese Literature
Topics in Chinese Literature Irregular. Study Area I [I] [L] Formerly CHIN 351. Prereq.: CHIN 225 or 226 (either may be taken concurrently), or permission of instructor. Representative selections from modern Chinese authors. Taught in Chinese. May be repeated for up to 9 credits with different topics.
CHIN 315 - Topics Chinese Culture
Topics in Chinese Culture Irregular. Study Area II [I] Formerly CHIN 341. Prereq.: CHIN 225 or 226 (eigther may be taken concurrently), or permission of instructor. Aspects of Chinese cultural development. Taught in Chinese. May be repeater for up to 9 credits with different topics.
CHIN 335 - Adv Chinese for Oral Expression
Advanced Chinese for Oral Expression Irregular. [I] Prereq.: CHIN 225 or permission of instructor. Student development or oral proficiency in Chinese through discussion of readings, films and other authentic materials. Taught in Chinese.
CHIN 336 - Advanced Chinese Composition
Advanced Chinese Composition Irregular. [I] Prereq.: CHIN 226 or permission of instructor. Student developoment of written proficiency in Chinese based on readings, translations, and frequent compositions. Taught in Chinese.
CHIN 341 - The Chinese Heritage I
The Chinese Heritage I Fall. Study Area II [I] Prereq.: CHIN 126 or equivalent. Mainstreams of Chinese cultural development. Use of Chinese texts.
CHIN 351 - Modern Chinese Literature I
Modern Chinese Literature I Fall. [I] Prereq.: CHIN 342 or equivalent. Representative selections from modern Chinese authors are studied in the original texts.
CHIN 352 - Modern Chinese Literature II
Modern Chinese Literature II (E) [I] Prereq.: CHIN 351 or equivalent. Continuation of CHIN 351.
CHIN 410 - Business Chinese I
Business Chinese I (E) [I] [GR] Prereq.: CHIN 342 or CHIN 352 or permission of instructor. Development of oral and written skills needed for conducting business in China with business firms. Study of the cultural attitudes of Chinese business people.
CHIN 475 - Studies in Classical Chinese
Studies in Classical Chinese Irregular. [I] Prereq.: CHIN 304 or 315, or permission of instructor. Introduction to classical Chinese literature, including etymology, semantics, grammar, and literature Taught in Chinese. May be repeated for up to 6 credits with different topics.
