Mandarin & Cantonese are taught.

Students with previous background in the study of Chinese (in high school or at another school or college) may take the placement test. The test results will help to determine your  appropriate CCSF course level.
In addition, based on your score and post-test consultation with the test advisor, you may apply to earn extra units. For example, if you place into Chinese 2, upon completion of that course with a grade of A or B, you will be awarded units for both Chinese 1 and 2 (five units per course for a total of 10 units). If you place into Chinese 2B, you will be awarded 2A course credit (three units per course for a total of six units); however, you will not be assigned a letter grade for these extra units.
There is no charge to students for the additional units. At this time, the units awarded only apply to the following classes:
            Chinese 1, 1A, 1B
            Chinese 2, 2A, 2B
            Chinese 3, 3A, 3B
            Chinese 4, 4A, 4B
1. You may take the placement test at the Language Center in the Rosenberg Library (R205) on the following dates :
Friday, May 8, 2009, from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm
Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 9:00 am-11:00 am
If you think that you do not need the full two hours to complete the test, you can arrive at any time during the scheduled period (see above). Please be aware, however, that you must finish the test by 4 p.m.
2. You must present a photo ID in order to take the placement test.  You will also need a #2 pencil to mark the test answer sheet.
 3. After the test, you should hand in the (Scantron) answer sheet along with the unmarked test to the test administrator.  Tests may not be taken out of the Language Center at any time, for any reason.
 4. After three working days, you should check with the test advisor, Professor Hsin-Yun Liu, for test results and consultation.
You must complete the “Contract for Credit for Previous Study of Chinese” form to apply for credit for previous study upon completion of your CCSF Chinese course.
The CCSF Foreign Language Department wishes to thank the Language Center and the Office of Matriculation for their support in operating this pilot program.
