![]() City Lit - Mandarin Course outline What is the course about? To provide students with a good grasp of the fundamentals of Chinese, both spoken and written and to provide students with the ability to understand conversational Chinese at natural speed, with the confidence to respond appropriately when spoken to in a wide range of situations. What topics will we cover? Themes: personal identification; family and home; greetings and other courtesies; counting and money; family and home, food and drink. Grammar: basic sentence structure By the end of this course you should be able to: -say who you are and where you come from -talk about your family -exchange greetings and other courtesies -purchase items in a shop -order a meal in a restaurant -understand Chinese currency -use numbers and state your age -recognise some characters (30-40) -read basic sentences -use a bilingual Chinese/English dictionary What level is the course? Beginners course - no previous knowledge required. How will I be taught? Communicative/direct method approach with the emphasis on speaking and listening skills. Methods include question and answer, pair practice, group and whole class work, role play. Please note students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities. Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)? All materials provided by the tutor. Students do not work through set texts or particular textbooks. What feedback will I get? Tutor's feedback during/after each classroom activity (see no.5 above). Homework. Student's self-assessment You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Will I have a chance to give my views on the course? Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. When I've finished, what course can I do next?
