![]() College of Charleston - School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs Chinese Courses Offered CHNS 101 and 102 Elementary Mandarin Chinese: Introduces the fundamental structures of Mandarin Chinese, the national language of the People's Republic of China, with emphasis on acquisition of the basic language skills in the following order: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. ENGLISH phonetic transliteration (Pinyin) used at first; Chinese characters introduced gradually. CHNS 201 and 202 Intermediate Mandarin Chinese: A continuation of 101 and 102. Develops a basic proficiency in Chinese and familiarity with Chinese culture through practice in the use of basic language skills and acquisition of vocabulary. CHNS 313 and 314 Conversation and Composition: Intensive studies designed to supplement or to investigate more fully the offerings in the Chinese curriculum. CHNS 390 Special Topics (Independent Study): Intensive studies designed to supplement or to investigate more fully the offerings in the Chinese curriculum. LTCH 250 Chinese Literature in English Translation: Study of selected works, representing major literary periods and genres, which illuminate another language and culture or era of a shared human condition.
