Course Description:
Beginning Mandarin course. Practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Writing will be in both Pinyin phonetic system and Chinese characters.
Course Content and Student Learning Outcomes:
Instruction in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in everyday topics:greeting, family, dates and time, hobbies, visit friends.
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
Speaking: Master the pinyin phonetic system. Conduct oral communications, produce accurate pronunciation and intonation.
Listening: Understand short dialogues, narratives on daily life situations introduced in the textbook and supplementary material.
Reading: Comprehend simple reading texts on personal and social matters.
Use basic reading strategies to identify categories, main ideas, organizations, and specific details. Writing: Master strokes and their orders, radicles. Write traditional characters, comprehend corelational simplified characters. Employ basic sentence   structures and vocabulary, produce coherent sentences, short paragraphs and  dialogues.
Homework and Assignments: Homework and assignments will be on both oral and written (characters and  pinyin). Students are expected to turn in homework and assignments on time to  receive full credit. Late submission within the week of the due date will receive  only half credit. If later than a week, the homework or assignment may not be  accepted. After an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to make up a  missed homework or assignment with in the week of the due date. Test and  quiz cannot be made up unless it was approved by the instructor in advance. The required hours by arrangement in this class can be fulfilled in a number of   ways, in the Foreign Language Center or at home, listen to recorded audio or   video materials that accompany the textbook, do on-line exercises, or visit   recommended web sites to learn about the culture.
Final Examination:
The final examination will be comprehensive exams covering the lessons   taught in the textbook and the supplementary materials practiced in class. The   final Exam will be held on the date assigned by the college (Schedule of Classes page 95).
Attendance Regulations: Students are expected to attend class on time. Six hours of absences are the maximum allowed in the entire semester. Three tardies are considered the  equivalency of one absence. Come to the class 30 minutes late will be count as  half absence. If a student is absent excessively, the final grade will be affected. It is student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from the class.
During class sessions turn off your cell phone, and no gum chewing.
Grading Policy: The final grade will be based on the following:
     a. Class performance – Attendance and participation (20%)
     b. Completion of homework and assignments on time (30%)
     c. Quizzes (15%)
     d. Final exam (35%)
