Confucius Institute - Cleveland State University

Confucius Institute - Cleveland State University

Confucius Institute - Cleveland State University

April 9, 2008 saw the historic opening of the Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University (CSU). A delegation led by Dr. Liwei Dong, Dean of the College of International Culture Exchange, Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, traveled to Cleveland to join in the festivities. Capital University is the partner of CSU in promoting the use of the Chinese language and appreciation of Chinese culture as well as economic development in Ohio. Thanks to the support of Mr. Anthony Yen, Chairman of TENAX Corporation, and the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), the Chinese Ambassador announced the award of the Confucius Institute to CSU on the occasion of his recent visit to Cleveland.
In welcoming the visiting dignitaries to Cleveland, Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang, Director of the Confucius Institute, quoted Confucius:
Which means in English, "Is it not wonderful to have friends coming from far away?" She indicated: "Dr. James McLoughlin, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, has been absolutely essential to the successful establishment of the Confucius Institute. Without his hard work and consistent support, our Confucius Institute at CSU would not have been possible."
Dean James McLoughlin briefly explained the purpose of the Institute. He noted that "This Confucius Institute would not exist today without the leadership of Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang. For the last number of years she has tirelessly laid the groundwork by teaching courses in China, organizing international conferences and being our liaison in negotiating our agreements with school systems and universities. Most important, she has been a consistent, reliable and exemplary ambassador for the university." Then, he invited dignitaries including Dr. Michael Schwartz (President of CSU), Dr. Mary Jane Saunders (Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of CSU), Dr. Liwei Dong, Mr. Anthony Yen , and Dr. Lih-Ching Chen Wang to join him in cutting the ceremonial ribbon and unveiling the plaque to symbolize the formal opening.
Central to the work of the Institute is to continue to prepare up to 60 teachers of Chinese for public and private schools, colleges and other organizations as well as assist them to be successful on the job. CSU is planning an International Academy of Cleveland with three local school systems and other organizations to attract foreign personnel to the region. The Institute coordinates short and extended exchanges of faculty, teachers, and students from both China and Ohio to pursue degrees and have enriching experiences through a network of Chinese universities and school systems.
In cooperation with the School of Business Administration at CSU, the Institute will offer professional development and technical assistance to Ohio companies doing business in China and assist Chinese businesses interested in relocating to Ohio. The Capital University in Beijing will collaborate with the Institute in offering short workshops to prepare Ohioans in Chinese language, culture, business practices, and other topics and longer programs to assist a family relocating to China for business. Anthony and David Yen are guiding these activities, including a possible Ohio trade mission to Beijing after the Olympics to create awareness of Ohio business opportunities.
