![]() Confucius Institute - George Mason University George Mason University has been approved to establish a Confucius Institute (CI) for Virginia. The institute will be a strong complement to the university’s existing programs and academic mission.
The National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language has been charged with establishing Confucius Institutes worldwide. The purpose of the institutes is to promote friendly relationships with other countries and enhance the understanding of the Chinese language and culture among world Chinese learners. The Confucius Institute Headquarter will be established in Beijing.
The institutes are named after Confucius, a famous thinker, educator and philosopher in Chinese history. His doctrine continues to have an important influence throughout the world, and the use of his name shows the longevity and profundity of Chinese language and culture. It also embodies the developing trend of the integration of Chinese language and culture into today’s world.
The Confucius Institute at George Mason University in collaboration with Beijing Language and Culture University, will promote Chinese language and culture at George Mason University and in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its primary objectives will be to:
•Provide Chinese language and culture courses; •Offer teacher training and professional development for pre-service and in-service Chinese language teachers; •Support the study of Chinese language and culture in Virginia; •Support cultural exchange and study abroad; and •Provide Chinese cultural programming. The School of Management (SOM) sees a clear connection between the CI, the business school, and the business community. SOM’s involvement with the CI will support their goals to develop a Center of Global Business Studies and is consistent with plans to develop a Global Business Education program.
