Confucius Institute - Rutgers University

The Confucius Institute at Rutgers University (CIRU), as the first and only Confucius Institute in New Jersey, was established in partnership with Jilin University in China and with the support from the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) to promote quality Chinese language and culture education and to serve as a resource center for China in the state.
Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick announced the opening of the CIRU at a ceremony on November 9, 2007. After several months’ preparation, CIRU began operation at its office on the New Brunswick Campus in May 2008. The institute aims to respond to the need of the various constituencies in New Jersey for information about China and to offer programs for achieving excellence in teaching and research in Chinese language and culture within the university and among the general public.
CIRU also strives to enhance and expand scholarly activities of the university in the broad area of Chinese studies. The institute supports the expansion and diversification of the cooperation of the university and the state with China and East Asia.
