![]() Crocodile Mandarin School Vancouver The Crocodile Mandarin School is a language instruction organization now operating at two locations, at the Scottish Cultural Centre adjacent to the Vancouver airport and at 420 East Broadway in Vancouver. Our mission is to foster Mandarin proficiency among the children of the lower mainland to both enrich their personal lives and give them an important career edge in the new century. Our school is primarily intended for children who lack the benefit of a Chinese-speaking environment at home and therefore have little or no opportunity to practice Chinese. A New Approach Students who look forward to coming to language class? Who are reluctant to go home? Believe it or not, that’s what many parents have reported to us. Mandarin has traditionally been taught as an academic subject, and children begin responding to it as they do to other academic subjects like math and reading--with resistance. Why (they justifiably wonder) should I labour in Mandarin Chinese class after working hard in school all week? The really unlucky ones are pressed into this distasteful routine until well into their teenage years, at which point they have developed a lifelong revulsion to the language. At Crocodile, Mandarin is not treated as a school subject. Children learn through movement and music. Rhyming and rhythmic activities. Artwork, stories, and games. And, of course, camaraderie with their fellow students. We believe that kids learn best in a comfortable, context-rich environment with a minimum of English translation.
