SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS Full Unit Outline - Enrolment Approved Monday, December 12, 2005 UNIT TITLE Chinese (Introductory 1) UNIT CODE CHI1101 CREDIT POINTS 15 FULL YEAR UNIT No PRE-REQUISITES MODE OF DELIVERY On-campus DESCRIPTION This is an introductory unit to the Chinese (Putonghua) language for beginners with emphasis on the rudiments of Chinese phonetics and the four tones using the Chinese Pinyin phonetic system. Students will acquire language for basic communication. LEARNING OUTCOMES On completion of this unit students should be able to: 1. use the Chinese language with a level of skill equivalent to Speaking: 0, Listening: 0, Reading: 0, Writing: 0 on the ASLPR (Australian Second Language Proficiency Ratings (Ingram and Wylie, 1979/1985); 2. recognize and produce the sounds of standard Chinese (Putonghua/Mandarin); 3. have mastered the four tones; 4. be able to read Pinyin (Chinese phonetic script); 5. pronounce simple words and phrases written in Pinyin; 6. listen to Chinese speech on tape and identify the four tones; 7. read and pronounce a number of simple sentences correctly and write them down in Pinyin when hearing them; 8. make some very simple conversation in Chinese; and 9. recognise the simplified characters which have been introduced and explained. UNIT CONTENT 1. Introduction to the rudiments of Chinese phonetics and the Chinese phonetic alphabet. 2. Learning the correct pronunciation of Chinese sound and undertaking drills on initials, finals and basic syllables. 3. Learning to pronounce the four tones of standard Chinese (Putonghua/Mandarin). 4. Listening to and identifying Chinese speech sounds and tones. Making tonal comparisons. 5. Reading and pronouncing Chinese Pinyin words. 6. Taking short dictation in Chinese and learning to produce correct Pinyin phonetics and identify and place the correct tone markers. 7. Acquiring basic vocabulary for simple conversation. 8. Introducing a limited number of simplified characters and their origin. TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESSES The teaching time will be divided into 2 hours of lecturing and two hours of supervised work with tutors/language laboratory assistant. Class teaching will be conducted according to the communicative approach. It will include aural and oral drills in a language laboratory and classroom situation and individual practice in situational settings. The unit will also offer the necessary socio-cultural and historical background information.
