Chinese is the largest official language in the world. China’s economy has been growing at between 5-15% per year for nearly thirty years.Moreover the joining of the WTO in 2000 has highlighted China as a key growth area for international trade and partnership development, making it the second largest exporting and the third largest importing nation in 200. About one-fifth of the world speaks Chinese as its native language, making it the language with the most native speakers. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Aims
This course is specially designed to meet the needs of business professionals and students who wish to improve their Chinese language as well as business knowledge. Therefore emphasis is not placed only on the development of the Chinese language within the business context, but also on cultural understanding of China. By the end of the course, students should gain considerable general knowledge of China, understand more about Chinese business culture and be able to communicate within certain business situations.
Method & Teaching Materials
Chinese for Business will be based on ‘Chinese for Business’, which is written especially for EBSL students.
The course will be over three terms, each term with 12 weeks and each week with 2 hours of tuition. Apart from standard teaching methods, ‘questions and discussions’ are an integral part of this stage. Students will be asked to take part in various business scenarios and simulated meetings, and to deliver business presentations.
The number of participants will be limited to a maximum of twelve to allow greater interaction.

Applicants should have learned the basic grammar structures of modern Chinese, and attained a reasonable level of fluency with a vocabulary of approximately 1,500 words and roughly 1000 Chinese characters.
