Why study Chinese language and culture in DCLL ofFudan University? ◆ Whether you choose to study Chinese in order to prepare to live or work in China or to gain insight into Chinese civilization, history, fast-growing industries, pop and business culture, we have something that will interest you. You can learn both modern Chinese and the ancient, literary form, called classic Chinese. We have some options for students who can already read Chinese fluently, and we warmly welcome them to join the appropriate classesat various levels.We will encourage you to spend at least two years studying Chinese in DCLL. Most of the faculties in DCLL have earned national or even international reputation for their research on Chinese culture, literature as well as Chinese language. Their influence in academic communities can be shown in some of the well-known majors for Ph. D candidates in DCLL, such as classic and modern Chinese, classic Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, folklore studies, film studies, comparative literature, etc. They will give you hand-to-hand guidance on ancient and modern Chinese culture. The obvious truth is that if you want to do business with your well-educated Chinese partners (often called ru shang, Confucian tycoons) nowadays, you have to be at home in their culture and literature. Compradors who are fluent both in English and Chinese are especially preferable in Shanghai.
