Non-Diploma Chinese Language Program The College of International Culture and Education of Guangxi Normal University provides non-diploma education in Chinese language and Chinese culture for a period of half a year or longer for foreigners and foreign citizens of Chinese origin whose native tongue is not Chinese, and overseas Chinese. It has been undertaking the teaching of Chinese as a second language as long as 17 years. All its full-time teaching staff hold a Master’s degree in the area and a certificate in teaching Chinese as second language. They are well-qualified and experienced teachers of Chinese as a second language, who have a wide range of knowledge in the area and varieties of teaching methods. It is equipped with perfect language teaching facilities such as large, medium-sized and small classrooms, multi-functional classroom, language laboratory, reading room, and multi-media facilities. It is designated as an HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) center which provides an HSK test two times a year. Placement Test A placement test, both oral and written, is given at the beginning of a new semester to the new students to see the level of their listening, speaking, reading and writing. On this basis, they will be placed in different classes in order for the teachers to teach according to their respective level, thus ensuring the quality of teaching. Levels and Classes Classes are usually divided into elementary level, intermediate level, and advanced level, and each level may be subdivided if needed. Students will be recommended to study in a class which fits their level of Chinese according the results of the placement test. Courses and Textbooks We highly recommend the textbook series of Chinese as a second language published by Beijing University of Language and Culture for the teaching of language skills, language knowledge, and cultural aspects. The teaching of Chinese as a second language includes such courses as Basic Chinese, Practical Chinese, and Works from Chinese Literature. There are long-term programs (6 months or longer) and short-term programs (July-August during the summer break, and January-February during the winter break). Courses offered are determined on the basis of the level and request of the students.
