C301 Third Year Chinese I
Objectives:
   1. Have a fair command of the active vocabulary, expressions and grammatical structures introduced in the text materials and be able to use them appropriately for communication. 
   2. Have initial ability to distinguish the differences between the written and spoken form of certain Chinese expressions, and begin to understand the basic rhetorical structures of Chinese expository essays. 
   3. Have further understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese society. 
   4. Listening:  To understand face-to-face, non-technical speech in controlled contexts and familiar topics in everyday life and to comprehend the gist of authentic media broadcasts with some supporting details. 
   5. Speaking:  To engage in conversation and discussion on general topics in an interactive fashion, to express your ideas and defend your point of view in relatively clear, connected discourse such as narration, description, and explanation. 
   6. Reading:  To understand the gist of written passage on social issues for general readers and be able to summarize the main ideas in short sentences or phrases; to apply reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and guessing unknown words. 
   7. Writing:  To write cohensive and coherent short prose such sa summaries, social notices, and essays.

C401/501 Fourth Year Chinese I
Objectives:
   1. Have an ability to utilize basic idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms as well as expand their repertoire of the "active" vocabulary, expressions and
   2. grammatical structures introduced in the texts.  Have an ability to distinguish different literary types and styles and understand their basic rhetorical structures. 
   3. Listening:  To understand one-way, specialized speech in controlled contexts and to comprehend the gist of authentic media broadcast with supporting details. 
   4. Speaking: To discuss abstract and academic questions; to provide hypothetical propositions and defend your own view points in clear, connected
   5. discourse; to handle unforeseen, complicated situations.  Reading:   To thumb through an article and understand its main points and important details; to apply reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and guessing unknown words. 
   6. Writing:   To write cohensive and coherent prose for different purposes.
