 Loma Linda University School of Science and Technology - Chinese Studies Program We welcome you to our Chinese Studies Program which focuses on equipping students, faculty, staff, and employees with the knowledge of the Chinese language, culture, history, literature, geography, contemporary politics and economics, and Chinese philosophies and religions. This certificate program is intended to prepare the students, especially health-care professionals, with the background, understanding, and practical first-hand "China" experience and professional skills to work in a Chinese community, interact with, and serve Chinese patients in a clinical setting here and abroad.
Our program is consonant with the traditional spiritual and educational emphasis of community service and global outreach of Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center. With the emerging geopolitico-economic importance of China and its relationship with the United States, such health-care professional preparation is highly recommended for cross-cultural and scientific-technological exchange.
Presently the Chinese Studies Program offers 8 courses of 4 units each, including:
Chinese Civilization, China Today--its Language and Culture,
Mandarin I,
Mandarin II,
Immersion Language and Culture Program,
Healthcare Service Learning in a Chinese Context,
Mandarin for Healthcare Professionals,
Directed Study (with or without coupling with 3 units of Chinese Linguistic Analysis and Biblical Hermeneutics.)
Two of the courses are integrated with a domestic or overseas international service project within a Chinese community with service learning and practical hands-on experience with patient contacts.
To earn the Chinese Studies Certificate, students must successfully complete a total of 21 units of the above-listed courses with a letter grade of B or better.
