The teaching and learning methods we use on the course
Students learn the tonal system by listening to and repeating words and phrases guided by the tutor's demonstration and written notes with tones marked. They are given listening exercises to differentiate the tones and can purchase a cassette (£1) prepared by the tutor to practise at home. The conversation topics listed overleaf are introduced using a limited range of language patterns and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to practise manipulating the language acquired through role-play and interpersonal conversations in pairs and small groups in class. The class is for spoken Cantonese, reference notes are in romanised script. There is no course book, instead students are given handouts prepared by the tutor and can purchase a cassette which contains all the lessons corresponding to the notes. The medium of instruction is English with as much Cantonese introduced as possible.
How we assess your progress on the course
The tutor keeps a record of progress and feeds back regularly to individuals.
What extra study/practice we expect you to do outside the class
Students must revise each week's notes and work with the cassette to learn to produce the tones correctly and memorise vocabulary and sentence structures. If possible, they should practice with a native speaker.
