Introduction to basic conversation patterns of contemporary Chinese, emphasizing vocabulary (pinyin and simplified Chinese characters) and grammar. Cultural concepts, grammatical structures, and vocabulary in-troduced in class are reinforced in small-group language practice sessions. The second course, a continuation of Chinese 110, also introduces traditional Chinese characters.

Prerequisite: Chinese 120 or placement into the course
A continuation of Chinese 110-120 with focus on not only the receptive language skills of listening and read-ing but also on creative language skills such as speaking and writing. Only textbook learning materials are used In Chinese 201; authentic learning materials from real-life sources are added In Chinese 202. Offered as demand warrants.
