![]() Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School Mission Our aim is to teach the Chinese language, both written and oral, and foster an understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture within our multicultural society and Mon Sheong spirit. Introduction The Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School started in 1968 to fulfill one of the aims of the Foundation in promoting Chinese culture, heritage, and philosophy among our younger generations. The Chinese School offers options of studying Chinese (Cantonese), conversational Putonghua, and mathematics. A new stream of studies using putonghua to teach Chinese was initiated in September 2007. Being one of the largest private Chinese schools in Canada, the Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School has a total enrolment of more than a thousand students in its North York, Etobicoke, and Markham campuses. All teachers are university or college graduates with rich experience and strong dedication. The School has a history of forty-one years, and developed effective teaching method to encourage students to interact with each other and to boost self-confidence and expression. We currently have three campuses to serve the growing community Chinese (Cantonese) Program (K1 to L11) Chinese (Cantonese) Program offers 13 grades from junior kindergarten to grade 11 (K1 to L11) and accepts students from 3 years of age and up. Students in junior grades learn pronunciation, writing, sentence structure, singing, and customs; while senior students receive training in essay writing, calligraphy, literature, geography, and history. The Chinese (Cantonese) curriculum is specially designed to embrace Canadian and Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese characters are taught. Students will start from learning basic Chinese characters, and then proceed to phrases, sentences and finally, essays. In this way, students will be able to learn the language systematically. Chinese (Putonghua) Program (KP1 to P3) A Chinese program using Putonghua as the teaching medium was initiated at North York Campus and Markham Campus in September 2007. Classes of Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 (KP1 to P3) are offered at these two campuses. In 2009-2010, Putonghua classes will be added to the Etobicoke campus for Kindergarten (KP) students. These classes in 3 campuses are offered for students of 3 years old and up. The specially designed kindergarten curriculum includes basic concepts such as numbers, big-small, up-down, objects that can be observed readily in students’ surroundings such as people, rain, dog, flowers, etc. The Chinese characters in the program materials are supplemented by lively illustrations and Hanyu Pinyin. As of September 2009, the Chinese (Putonghua) classes will adopt a new set of program material developed by Mon Sheong Foundation Chinese School. Highlights of the new program materials are: 1. The program is suitable to all English speaking students The material is specially designed for English speaking students who may have no background of the Chinese language. Through the “synchronized text and language” methodology, each character and each chapter in the curriculum is set in a special way that will facilitate learning in a speedy manner. More importantly, the students will also be able to retain their learning in the long run. 2. The content of the program is of practical value to students Context of the program material is carefully selected to capture students’ interests. At the same time, the words, phrases, and sentences learned can be used in a working or social environment at a later stage. In addition, our program will enable students to compose phrases, short sentences and complete sentences with single characters, so that the single characters learned are of practical use to students. 3. Make use of the virtues of Chinese characters Chinese is a beautiful language, its virtue lies in its regularity and it is easy to learn! Our curriculum emphasizes the special characteristics of the Chinese characters. Students will easily learn the words by analogy since part of some Chinese characters are repetitive. 4. Take child psychology into consideration fully The key to success is the student’s initiative in learning. The content of the curriculum is diverse and lively to draw the interests of the students. In-class activities are arranged in each lesson so students will learn actively in a warm and cheerful environment. They will participate enthusiastically, and learning Putonghua is such fun that they will wish to come back to class next week. 5. Learning outcomes Using Book 1 as example, we expect a student with no Chinese language background can achieve the following: - Read and write 103 simplified Chinese characters - Read and write over 140 words and short phrases - Speak, read and write about 100 short sentences that are of practical value, e.g., Is it raining? No, it isn’t raining, it’s snowing. Interaction is encouraged and students will learn the language in a cheerful learning environment.
