New York Chinese School

New York Chinese School

New York Chinese School

During the Ching Dynasty in the year 1909, certain organization in the New York Community Center, along with other interested individuals suggested establishing an overseas Chinese School in New York. In the beginning, there were about twenty students. The number of students grew rapidly with the support of the New York Overseas Community Center. The growth of the school can be compared to as a little flower bud, blossoming from 1909 into a flower which has never fade since. Today New York Chinese School (NYCS) is the largest Chinese School in North America.

The New York Chinese School is a non-profit 501(C) (3) school, staffed by dedicated teachers. Currently the school has a faculty of 50 people. The teachers of New York Chinese School have been working hard in bringing up the level of Chinese children. For New York Chinese School, teaching Chinese to students is only the first step. More importantly, through learning Chinese, the students can understand the traditional Chinese virtues and values better. The school believes that if everyone can abide by the traditional moralities, an intimate family relationship and a harmonious society can easily be established. In turn, countries and its people will prosper from it. As a result, a peaceful world can be achieved.

Currently, the school has more than 3,000 students in grade levels ranging from kindergarten to high school. There are 111 classes including Cantonese and Mandarin. The courses taught in the school are aimed at familiarizing the students with the Chinese language and history. The teachers stress the importance of writing and reading abilities, as well as cultivating the children's interest in calligraphy and art. Targets are set and students are encouraged to achieve them. The progress is closely monitored with tests regularly and an annual end of year examination. Besides studying Chinese in classrooms, our teachers extend the learning through many different programs and activities such as Chinese Dance Program, Piano Program, Violin Class, Drawing Class, Art and Craft Class, Computer class, NYCS Patrol and NYCS Drum Corps.
