![]() Newcastle University - School of Modern Languages Chinese/Japanese and Cultural StudiesBA Honours (TT41)This degree programme offers a refreshing alternative to traditional East Asian Studies packages by combining communicative language study with a range of social science options to produce versatile, highly employable graduates. At Newcastle, we adopt a largely sociological and anthropological approach to understanding East Asian cultures, rather than seeking an understanding through the study of literature. Although this is a Single Honours programme, it is inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary in nature, with eight academic disciplines across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences contributing to the teaching (Modern Languages; Sociology; Politics; Economics; Communications; Geography; History and Music). At each Stage you spend one third of your time on Chinese or Japanese language study with your remaining time spent studying foundational modules in social, cultural and communications studies and (from Stage 2) China or Japan-specific social science modules. At Stage 1 you either take introductory modules in Chinese or Japanese language (if entering ab initio) or Level B modules in Chinese or Japanese language (if entering post A-level). The emphasis is on communication skills, and no prior knowledge of Chinese or Japanese is necessary if entering ab initio. As well as language modules you study foundational modules in sociology, anthropology and/or communications studies. At Stage 2, if you entered ab initio, you will build on the language skills developed at Stage 1 with further Chinese or Japanese language modules. Alongside these, you can choose from a number of available pathways in social sciences and cultural studies, including China or Japan-specific modules and general modules. If you entered post A-level, you will spend the year abroad in China or Japan, which gives you the opportunity to practise the language skills you have developed and experience East Asian culture first-hand. The year abroad is spent studying at a university with which we have exchange links. At Stage 3, if you entered ab initio, you will spend the year abroad in China or Japan, which gives you the opportunity to practise the language skills you have developed and experience East Asian culture first-hand. The year abroad is spent studying at a university with which we have exchange links. If you entered post A-level, you will continue to consolidate the language skills developed at Stages 1 and 2 with a view to gaining sufficient language competence to cope in general, personal, social, and business contexts. Alongside your language study, you can choose from a number of available pathways in social sciences and cultural studies, including China or Japan-specific modules and general modules. At Stage 4, if you entered ab initio, you will continue to consolidate the language skills developed at Stages 1, 2 and 3 with a view to gaining sufficient language competence to cope in general, personal, social, and business contexts. If you entered post A-level, you will begin to develop advanced writing skills and mediating skills in Chinese or Japanese through practice in guided translation, liaison interpreting and text summary exercises. Alongside your language study, you will further develop understanding of your chosen social science and cultural studies specialisms. You may also choose to write a dissertation, which will allow you to explore in depth one aspect of Chinese/Japanese language, culture, society, politics, geography or economics.
