Princeton University - Princeton in Beijing

NB Although PiB is hosted in China at Beijing Normal University, you apply directly to Princeton for admission. Details below:

Eligibility
Most PiB students are American college undergraduates who have taken at least one year of college Chinese courses by the time they attend PiB. The student body is quite diverse. About half of our students come from Princeton. The rest come from dozens of college and universities around the world. Graduate students, a few juniors and seniors in high school, and a few working professionals also apply each year. In order to apply for PiB, you must have studied the equivalent of a year's worth of college Chinese by the time you attend our program in mid-June. PiB does not accept zero beginners.
Host Institution
PiB's host institution, Beijing Normal University, is one of China's leading institutions of higher learning. It is recognized widely for its strong faculty and the caliber of its students. Students will live in a well-equipped dormitory on the campus with their teachers. The rooms are doubles and have air conditioning, phones, and T.V.; all have private bathrooms with a toilet and a shower. School dining facilities are located nearby, and there are dozens of restaurants and small markets just outside the campus gates. Beijing Normal University is located in the northwestern part of Beijing between the second and third ring roads, with convenient access to all parts of the city via subway, public buses, and taxis.

Application Forms
Application Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully before filling out your application.

If you are applying for financial aid from PiB, your complete application must be received by January 14, 2011. If not, the due date for applications is January 31, 2011. Late applications will only be considered on a space-available basis. Admission is competitive; please apply as soon as possible. Financial aid is limited, and we encourage you to apply to your home university for aid as well.

Princeton students, please note: current Princeton freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and graduate students who want to be considered for financial aid must fill out the Program in East Asian Studies financial aid application form rather than the Princeton in Beijing financial aid application form (i.e. the application is due on January 31, not January 14). Both financial aid forms will be available in the PiB office from December. Current Princeton seniors who want to be considered for financial aid are not eligible for funding from the Program in East Asian Studies and must fill out the PiB financial aid application form instead (i.e. the deadline for seniors applying for financial aid is January 14).

To print out the application forms, click on each of the three links below, wait for the page to load completely, then click "print" on your browser. You may need to adjust settings for the forms to print well. Please print this page as well for reference.

To view the three forms below, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click here to download.

Application Checklist

  1. Non-refundable Application Fee of $50. Please pay by check or money order payable to Princeton in Beijing; all payments should be made in US dollars. Do not send cash.

  2. Application Form. Please complete the form in English except where indicated. The essay can be single-spaced. Click the following link to print out an application form: PiB Application Form.

  3. CD. In Mandarin Chinese, introduce yourself and explain why you would like to study Chinese in Beijing. Please limit the recording to five minutes, label both the CD and the case, and make sure the CD is playable on a CD player (i.e. formatted for audio, not just for use on a computer). Please do not send cassette tapes.

  4. Transcript. Please enclose your most recent transcript from the institution at which you are currently studying or from which you most recently graduated. Please send official transcripts only. Do not send an unofficial printout of your grades, a report card, or a copy of your transcript. Official transcripts are available only from your school's Office of the Registrar. Please do not have your Registrar send  your transcript to us directly; have it sent to you, then include it with the rest of your application. (We receive many applications, and it is exceedingly difficult to keep track of things if the items are not sent in together.) Note: Princeton students, but only Princeton students, may substitute a print-out from the Princeton web. If you have not finished the fall semester at the time you apply, give us an unofficial record of your mid-term grades (such as a print-out from your own school's website). Once you finish the fall term, please have an updated, official transcript sent to the PiB office.

  5. Recommendation. You will need to send one letter of recommendation to PiB. Please have your recommender return the form to you in a signed and sealed envelope (provided by you), which you may then forward to PiB with other materials.  Please note that you need to fill out the top portion of the form first. Your recommendation should be from a Chinese language teacher.  If you have attended PiB in the past, please ask your PiB teacher-in-charge to write your recommendation letter. Otherwise, ask any recent Chinese language teacher to write it.  If you cannot obtain a recommendation from your Chinese language teacher, another teacher may write one for you.  Click the following link to print out a recommendation letter form: PiB Recommendation Letter.

  6. Financial Aid Form. Please include the most recent Federal Income Tax Return and a home-institution needs analysis (if any) as attachments. Click one of the following links to print out an financial aid form: PiB Financial Aid Form.  If you are currently a Princeton freshman, sophomore, or junior: You must apply for financial aid through the Program in East Asian Studies. Do not download this online financial aid form; instead go to the PiB office (218 Frist) or the East Asian Studies Program office (219 Frist) to pick up the form.
