What is the course about? The course is an interactive and practical introduction to basic Chinese (Mandarin) through the skills of listening, speaking and reading. Writing is minimal. The course also includes a section in English on Chinese culture and society. Who is the course for? The course is intended for anyone who has never studied the language before. Am I qualified to join the course? No previous qualifications are necessary. What will the course cover? The course will begin with basics such as pronunciation. It will cover basic language acquisition to deal with giving practical information, understanding responses concerning tourist and every day situations. What will I be able to do as a result of the course? By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• use appropriate greetings
• introduce yourself, family and friends and understand others do the same
• speak about and describe yourself
• count and understand numeric responses in Mandarin • deal with basic shopping situations: buying postcards, stamps, food, asking how much things are
• use appropriate vocabulary and structures for ordering snacks and drinks, as well as ordering food from restaurants
• extend your knowledge of Chinese culture and society
How will I be taught? You will be taught through visual stimulation, role plays, interactive pair and group activities. We will use audio materials, the internet and DVDs. How will I know I am progressing and how is the course assessed? The teacher will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your course, you will be asked to self assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above. You will also have three to four self assessments tasks to check your progress in the course. Will I have a chance to get my own views across? You will have constant contact with your tutor throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end. What can the course lead to?
The course will lead to a basic, working understanding and use of Chinese (Mandarin). We will issue you with our own Record of Achievement for Beginners' Chinese(Mandarin) which will state the goals you have achieved.
