Classes are delivered in the Chinese language and a particular emphasis is placed on student participation and engagement. At RMIT, Chinese is taught as a:
Chinese language programs enable students to develop strong cross-cultural communication skills; fostering a broader intellectual engagement with Chinese culture. Students may also have the opportunity to spend time in China for study tours for 6-12months on cultural exchanges. Students may also choose to apply for the University Mobility in the Asia Pacific Scholarship (UMAP) for the opportunity to undertake further studies in China. Chinese Courses The following Higher Education 12 Credit Point Chinese Courses are offered for both undergraduate and postgraduate students: LANG1068 Chinese 1 Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of language This course provides integrated training in speaking, listening, reading and writing through interactive classroom activities and home assignments. The aim of this unit is to introduce a beginner’s level of communicative competency in Chinese and lays the foundation for further Chinese study. LANG1069 Chinese 2 Prerequisites: Chinese 1 or equivalent. This course aims at a late beginner’s level of communicative competence in Chinese language and culture. It further extends the student’s communicative repertoire in topics such as school life, shopping and using transportation. LANG1070 Chinese 3 Prerequisites: Chinese 2 or equivalent. This course develops a student’s communicative skills in spoken and written Chinese, with an emphasis on the more complex grammatical structures and the use of Chinese in a wider range of personal and social situations and contexts. LANG1071 Chinese 4 Prerequisites: Chinese 3, VCE Chinese or equivalent. This course builds upon a student’s previous knowledge of Chinese language and encourages the creative and critical application of Chinese in a variety of social and cultural contexts. LANG1072 Chinese 5 Prerequisites: Chinese 4, or equivalent. This course builds communicative competence in topics of everyday interest in Chinese society; consolidates skills in simple correspondence and expository writing and enhances oral and aural skills by viewing and discussing a Chinese feature film. Topics include eating and food, shopping, education, media and family life. LANG1071 Chinese 6 Prerequisites: Chinese 5, or equivalent.
