3 Units Prerequisite: None Hours: 54 hours LEC This beginning course in conversational Mandarin emphasizes the development of oral language skills essential for understanding and speaking elementary Mandarin useful for everyday communication. MAND 102: Conversational Mandarin, Elementary 3 Units Prerequisite: None Hours: 54 hours LEC This course is a continuation of MAND 101. Further acquisition of language skills in understanding and speaking will be emphasized. Additional vocabulary and sentence patterns will be introduced. Students will gain proficiency in understanding and speaking Mandarin in everyday situations. MAND 299: Experimental Offering in Mandarin .5-4 Units Prerequisite: None Hours: 90 hours LEC See Experimental Offerings MAND 401: Elementary Mandarin 4 Units Prerequisite: None. General Education: AA/AS Area I; CSU Area C2; IGETC Area 6 Course Transferable to UC/CSU Hours: 72 hours LEC This beginning course in Mandarin Chinese emphasizes pronunciation drill, sentence pattern analysis, and the development of language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Character reading and writing are introduced. The students will also gain a better understanding of Chinese culture through the study of its language. MAND 402: Elementary Mandarin 4 Units Prerequisite: MAND 401 with a grade of "C" or better; or two years of high school Mandarin. General Education: AA/AS Area I; CSU Area C2; IGETC Area 6 Course Transferable to UC/CSU Hours: 72 hours LEC This course is the continuation of MAND 401. Further acquisition of language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be emphasized. Additional character reading and writing skills will be developed. Students will gain proficiency in understanding and speaking Mandarin in everyday situations. Students will also gain a better understanding of Chinese culture through the study of its language. MAND 405: Chinese Characters 1 Unit Prerequisite: None. Course Transferable to UC/CSU Hours: 18 hours LEC This is a beginning course in the study of Chinese characters. Fundamentals of the Chinese written language will be taught with an emphasis on reading and writing Chinese characters common in daily usage. MAND 411: Intermediate Mandarin 4 Units Prerequisite: MAND 402 with a grade of "C" or better; or three years of high school Mandarin. General Education: AA/AS Area I; CSU Area C2; IGETC Area 3B; IGETC Area 6 Course Transferable to UC/CSU Hours: 72 hours LEC This course is the continuation of MAND 402 with a review of grammar and further development of reading and writing skills in Mandarin. Passages from Chinese literature and reading on Chinese culture will be studied. MAND 412: Intermediate Mandarin 4 Units Prerequisite: MAND 411 with a grade of "C" or better; or four years of high school Mandarin.
