This level introduces the Mandarin pronunciation system — Hanyu Pinyin — and writing Chinese characters. You will learn simple sentence structures, grammar, and terminologies through exercises set in daily life. Upon completion of this level, you will gain basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture. Intermediate Level (DLCM 200 – 203) This level strengthens your foundation of speaking, comprehension, writing, and reading skills as previously acquired in the beginning level courses. You will also build intermediary proficiency in areas such as grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structures through a mix of exercises, short dialogues, and discussions. Completion of our beginner level or an evaluation is required. Advanced Level (DLCM 350) Our advanced seminar is designed for students who can speak Mandarin but find it difficult to conduct complex conversations. Apart from exploring daily usage topics, you will strengthen your conversational skills from examining current news and issues. As well, Chinese movies and texts based on Chinese culture will be presented, and you will acquire a deeper understanding of Chinese customs and beliefs. Throughout the course, you will learn advanced terminologies and sentence patterns. Completion of our intermediate level or an evaluation is required. Mandarin Conversation (DLCM 110) Designed for learners with understanding on Pinyin and basic sentence structures, this course focuses on enhancing students’ oral skills through learning vocabulary and constructions. Interactive exercises will hone students’ speaking and comprehension. Chinese communication styles will also be introduced. Follow this course to gain access to the incredible opportunities available to Chinese speakers. Completion of DLCM 100 or an evaluation is required. Mandarin for Travelers and the Hospitality Industry (DLCM 141) Designed for absolute beginners, this course will be divided into related components including trip planning, travel tips, and cultural notes. Common interactions with booking tickets, asking for directions, and bargaining at shops will also be examined. The course provides people working in the hospitality industry with basic vocabulary and common verbal exchanges required in their daily work. Travelers will also enjoy learning the basics of Chinese transportation and services. No previous experience is required. Business Mandarin (DLCM 310) This course is designed for individuals who would like to focus on spoken Mandarin in business settings. This course covers practical conversations with business context as well as useful business terminology. Beginning/intermediate level proficiency recommended. Assessment by instructor is available. Chinese Character Reading, Writing, and Typing (DLCM 194) Absolute beginners can now write or type Chinese characters! Join this course in learning how to read, write, and type simplified Chinese. Upon completion, you will understand 200 characters. Some knowledge of spoken Chinese is preferable, but the course is suitable for those with no previous experience. This level introduces the Yale system — the fundamental tone drills and phonetics for Cantonese pronunciation. Learn simple sentence structures, grammar, and terminologies through a wide variety of exercises, discussions, and listening comprehension exercises set in daily life. Intermediate Level (DLCC 200 – 203)
Continuing from the beginner courses, this level further examines a variety of daily-life situations through learning practical vocabulary and grammar. Drills and listening comprehension exercises will also be presented to help students develop competence in Cantonese. Completion of our beginner level or an evaluation is required. Advanced Level (DLCC 300-303) This level is suitable for students who have already achieved a solid competency in Cantonese but need to acquire more vocabulary and become more fluent in conversation. As with other courses, drills, situational role-plays, and exercises will help you fine-tune your communication skills with an emphasis on pronunciation refinement. It should also be suitable for students coming from a Cantonese family background.
