Chinese program
Chinese program is an interdisciplinary concentration that offers students an opportunity to pursue interests in Chinese studies. The curriculum emphasizes language training and cultural introduction through works in history, literature, cinema, and gender studies. Interested students are strongly advised to begin language work in their first or second year at SMU. This is especially true for students who hope to spend a summer or summer/fall in Beijing, China or a year in Taipei, Taiwan. With three years of training in language and culture, the program aims to prepare students for professional careers and graduatestudy.
The curriculum
1. language courses 1401, 1402. Beginning Chinese: Introduction to spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. Emphasizes foundation work through intensive drills in sounds and tones, sentence structure, and a vocabulary of about 600 characters. Students attend three weekly master classes plus two hours of practice in small groups. Computer, video, and audio assignments are required. Four credits per semester. 2401, 2402. Intermediate Chinese: Enhances basic language skills learned in beginning Chinese but focuses on language proficiency, particularly in the areas of description, narration, correspondence, and comparisons based on situational context. Students are encouraged to spend summer or summer/fall in Beijing, China upon finishing second-year Chinese. Students attend four weekly classes. The course is conducted in Chinese and requires out-of-class reading and composition. Video and audio materials are used. Four credits per semester. 3311, 3312. Advanced Chinese: Refines all four language skills with a focus on narrative and abstract expression at the paragraph level in oral and written form. Further development in language proficiency will be gained through exposure to an array of written and visual texts, such as television reports, newspaper, and journal articles. Out-of-class readings, compositions, and computer assignments are required. The course is conducted in Chinese. Prerequisites: Beginning and Intermediate Chinese.
