![]() Southwestern University - Department of Modern Languages and Literatures Chinese Program Description The Chinese program at Southwestern University serves to build foundational skills for students with professional career objectives, or who intend to pursue graduate programs. The Chinese program complements the educational development of students, whether their primary interest is in Chinese studies or some other field. The program offers courses on Beginning and Intermediate Chinese with accomodation for students at the Advanced level. In addition, the program offers courses on Chinese culture, complementing courses throughout the university. The objectives for each language course are first, to provide students with the opportunity to function in Chinese in writing, reading, speaking and listening; secondly, to introduce significant elements of Chinese culture, and finally to engage students in communities beyond the confines of the classroom and the university. Chinese language uniquely prepares students for committed engagement and study. As with other language and literature programs at Southwestern University, the Chinese program aims to build diverse perspectives. Technological developments facilitate communication with others outside of the university and permit a genuine possibility of lifelong learning. The Chinese program is also committed to expanding technology in the cla ssroom. In general, Chinese at Southwestern is fun, active, and serious about the pursuit of excellence. Southwestern University has just recently approved the Minor in Chinese. The Minor indicates how deeply SU is committed to the development of Chinese language and Asian Studies.
