The Chinese School of Delaware - in Hockessin - 德立華中文學校

The Chinese School of Delaware is a not-for-profit educational weekend school located at the Chinese American Community Center in Hockessin, Delaware. It was established in 1971 by a few families in the area. Over the years, it has grown into a school with 180 students at times. Along with the Chinese American Community Center (CACC), the school has been recognized as the local resource for Chinese culture and language. It is the vision of the Chinese School of Delaware to become a Chinese language school, which serves the community at large, and individuals who are interested in learning Chinese and its culture.
In 1992, Brandywine and Red Clay School districts approved the process where High School students, who study Chinese at the Chinese School of Delaware, will be accredited with half Carnegie Unit per each academic year. The Red Clay School District also invited the Chinese School as a partner and started offering Chinese as a foreign language course in John Dickenson High School. This program was expanded to include A. I. Du Pont High School and H. B. DuPont Middle School in 1993-1994 school year. The curriculum of the Chinese School of Delaware, in addition to teaching Chinese, also includes cultural activities, such as calligraphy, cooking, Ping-pong, Yo-Yo, Chinese Kung-Fu, Craft,  Chinese Chess and checkers.  Parents and school officials also are actively involved in the community for introducing Chinese cultures at various organizations and public schools.
Starting in fall 2005, the class structure is modified to have a two track system.  Track A is for families who speak Chinese at home (heritage students) and track B is for families who do not speak Chinese at home (non-heritage students).  However, both track students will join together for culture classes mentioned above.  Depends on the public interest, an adult conversational class is also offered. In 2005-06 school year, 7 teachers and 1 school administrator have participated College Board AP Chinese training and received their certificates.  Four teachers have been teaching at public schools.
The school starts at the last week in August each year.  There are two semesters of 16 weeks each. Classes meet every Sunday afternoon from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm with three periods of 45, 40, and 45 minutes, respectively. More detailed information is available on the school web site (www.ChineseSchoolDE.org). If you need additional information, regarding placement of the students, please contact the school principal.
