IF YOU ARE A COMPLETE BEGINNER WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE THEN THIS IS THE COURSE FOR YOU.
Course Content: The course is split into 10 units and follows the course-book BBC ACTIVE TALK CHINESE.  You will need to buy this book and preferably the accompanying CDs or cassettes.  For more information about the BBC Talk series, please visit the website:

You will cover the following topics during your course:
    * Greetings and numbers
    * Talking about yourself
    * Talking about friends and family
    * Ordering drinks in a café and dealing with prices
    * Asking for and understanding directions
    * Making simple enquiries
    * Booking accommodation
    * Dates, times and travel details
    * Shopping
    * Ordering food and expressing likes and dislikes
In the classes you will usually be working in small groups and pairs.  You will be learning simple structures and basic vocabulary to enable you to speak, listen, read and write in everyday situations when you visit the country.  To consolidate what you have learned in class, you will need to spend one to two hours per week working at home.
Assessment
Your course will be accredited by the National Open College Network (NOCN) which means that although there are no formal examinations at the end of the course, your work will be continuously assessed over the year by your tutor who will set and mark a number of short assessments. You will be required to keep a portfolio of this assessed work in order to gain your 6 credits for the Award in Language Skills.  
Progression
When you have achieved the Award in Language Skills, you can progress to the second year where you will be assessed in 2 skills at level 1.
