![]() UNISA [University of South Africa] - School of Languages and Literary Studies Chinese Mandarin - distance learning courseTHE STUDY OF MANDARIN CHINESE IN UNISA In UNISA, the student can take Mandarin Chinese as a major or ancillary subject for the degree course which fall in the area of humanities and social sciences, economics and management sciences, or theology and religious studies. For the student who does education, law or science, they can take Mandarin Chinese as an ancillary subject. If the student is only interested in doing the language of Mandarin, they can also do it for non-degree purposes (NDP). In such case, an official academic record/proof will be issued to the student upon their completion of the course. COURSE STRUCTURE
The Mandarin course offers 9 modules which are structured at three levels: LEVEL ONE consists of the following two modules, both of which place focus on the development of practical Mandarin speaking and listening abilities: LEVEL TWO includes another 2 modules which further the speaking and listening skills developed at the first level and emphasize the development of reading and writing skills. LEVEL THREE is composed of 5 modules which continue to build up the conversational and literary Chinese developed in both the first and second levels and one of the modules, Business Chinese, focuses on the learning of specialist Chinese. MAN801H Introduction to Chinese Culture, Customs and Traditions: This module is only taught in English so that it may cater for anyone who is interested in learning Chinese culture but who does not know the Chinese language. All of the modules are offered in both first and second semesters, with each module designed to be completed in one semester, i.e. around four and a half months. So, it will normally take about two to three years to complete all of the modules. If the student would like to start as a new beginner, the first module (modular code: MAN101R) at the first level is where they are suggested to start with.
