What is the Bristol MSc in East Asian Studies?

A new, one year full-time, multi-disciplinary Master's programme specially designed for graduates from any discipline who want to prepare themselves for a career in an organisation that has an East Asian focus or to undertake further research in the area.

It is a one year full-time programme comprising 3 core modules, 3 further optional modules plus the dissertation.

Why should I take the MSc in East Asian Studies?

East Asia will be a leading player in world economy in the 21st Century. The European Union is seeking to raise its own profile in China and to bring China fully into the world trading system. China's rate of economic growth is unprecedented - it is set to overtake the USA by 2038. Organisations throughout Europe are competing to operate in China. They vary from banking to retailing, from electronics to entertainment. There are also opportunities for careers in areas as diverse as law and journalism.

Getting started on a career is more and more difficult. You need something to give you a competitive edge, something that demonstrates your serious commitment to equipping yourself for that career. This programme will equip you with in-depth knowledge and understanding of East Asian societies in terms of their socio-economic, cultural and historical features. It will also give you the opportunity to gain a basic competence in one of the major languages of the region - either Chinese or Japanese.

The programme will also equip you to undertake further research in the field, and to take your studies on to a PhD.

What does the MSc involve?
It is a one year full-time programme comprising 3 core modules, 3 further optional modules plus the dissertation.

If you are not already competent in an East Asian language, you will be expected to include a language module in your options.

The MSc in East Asian Studies will offer non-native speakers of English, courses in Advanced English and in English for Business and Professional Purposes.Students may choose these rather than the existing Mandarin Chinese and Japanese options. As these are advanced courses, the normal requirement of evidence of competence in English by non-native English speakers still applies – usually IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. Combined with the programme’s unique emphasis on relations between Europe and East Asia, this route makes the programme attractive to potential students in China and the region.

The taught modules will be concentrated in Terms 1 & 2. In Term 3 you will be doing your dissertation and we are hope to offer some opportunities to work or study in East Asia (this may incur additional costs).
