![]() University of California, San Diego - Chinese Studies Program Chinese Studies is an inter-disciplinary program that allows students interested in China to utilize the university's offerings in various departments to build an inter-disciplinary major leading to a B.A. degree. Many of our students choose Chinese Studies as a second major or a minor, combining a UCSD disciplinary major (such as economics or political science) with Chinese Studies courses which prepare them for a career related to China. In addition to coordinating courses on China in various departments, the Chinese Studies Program offers language and culture courses under its own auspices to round out the available offerings.
Many of the participating faculty in the program have a converging interest in contemporary China. In addition to providing a wide range of courses on Chinese history, politics, society and economics. UCSD hosts one of the strongest programs on modern Chinese culture and society in the United States, with particular interest in religion, popular culture and film. Another focal point of research and teaching is the evolution of scientific ideas and technology in pre-modern China. The inter-disciplinary nature of the program can accomodate students with a wide range of interests. In addition to our local resources, the University of California Education Abroad Program (EAP) and Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP) offer study abroad programs at universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. This permits students to study aboard during their junior year or to participate in semester abroad.
