AIMS
The course is intended for students who have no previous knowledge of Chinese and offers an introduction to Chinese language and culture. The course develops all four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as part of the first semester of the full two-semester 30 credit module for beginners language. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Module-specific skills:
The student will show a grasp of the basic grammatical structures of the target language, and will be able to (a) read a straightforward narrative or descriptive text and summarise its contents in English, (b) write letters and other short texts in the foreign language, (c) use a reference grammar and bilingual dictionary to check the structural and lexical accuracy of his/her writing in the foreign language, and (d) elicit, understand and communicate basic factual information in the foreign language, orally and in writing.
Discipline-specific skills:
The student will understand the principles of learning a foreign language intensively and organise his/her learning with guidance from the tutor. He/she will also use available learning aids, in a variety of media, to consolidate his/her learning.
Personal and key skills:
The student will be able to communicate at a basic level in the foreign language and express and discuss views as part of a group. Students will make progress through developing skills of self-study and application and will develop an awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture.
LEARNING/TEACHING METHODS
The course provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammar structures in a communicative context. Teaching methods are based on interactive language development tasks, such as group work and role playing, and include the study of short texts, oral development work and listening comprehension exercises. Learning activities are supported by various media, including audio, video, and, where appropriate, computer software. The module is taught as far as possible in the target language.
ASSIGNMENTS
There are weekly coursework assignments.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is by a 1.5 hour written examination (50%) and an oral test (25%) and a 30 minute listening comprehension test (25%).
SYLLABUS PLAN
The course provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammar structures in a communicative context and in accordance with the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The teaching and learning plan follows the structured development of these skills as presented in the coursebook.
