The evening classes in Mandarin Chinese primarily use the ‘pinyin’ system which employs the Latin alphabet to represent the sounds of Chinese. Chinese characters may be looked at to varying degrees according to the wishes of any individual class. Generally, the classes focus on spoken Chinese relating to topics such as ‘Greetings’, ‘The Family’, ‘Eating and Drinking’ and so on. Some cultural background to the country is also provided and some basic geography together with relevant vocabulary. Beginners teaches language and culture for absolute beginners or those planning a trip to China for work or pleasure.
