THE  CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

 

The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi was established through a bilateral agreement between the governments of the Peoples Republic of China and Kenya.  The agreement was signed on 22nd June, 2004 .  The Institute was launched on Monday, 19th December, 2005 at a colourful ceremony held at Taifa Hall, University of Nairobi.  The launch was attended by the ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China to Kenya, Mr. Guo Chongli and Kenya’s Assistant Minister in charge of Higher Education, Dr. Kilemi Mwiria, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. G.A.O. Magoha among other distinguished guests from both the Peoples Republic of China and Kenya.

 

The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi is currently offering a certificate course in Chinese Language and  Culture.  The first lecture was delivered by the  ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China to Kenya, Mr. Guo Chongli on 10th December, 2005.  Successful members of  the first class of the Institute were awarded certificates on 4th October, 2006 at a ceremony presided over by the ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China to Kenya.  Five of the successful graduates, already recruited by the Zi Jing Great Wall of China Travelling Company were presented with appointment letters during the ceremony.

 

The University of Nairobi, through the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, and Tianjin Normal University have a collaborative link which includes an exchange of students and lecturers.  Chinese lecturers are teaching the Chinese language at the Institute while one of our lecturers is teaching  Kiswahili Language at Tianjin Normal University.  A member of the pioneer class of the Confucius Institute at the University  of Nairobi, Ruth Njeri, who won a competition in Chinese Language and Culture was awarded a scholarship to study for a degree in Chinese Language and Culture at Tianjin Normal University.   The Institute plans to eventually grow to a level that will enable it to offer degree programmes.

 

The college of  Humanities and Social Sciences takes this opportunity to inform the world of the existence of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi and the opportunities it offers for learning the Chinese Language and Culture that it offers.  All qualified persons are invited to apply for admission.  The University of Nairobi advertises for the certificate course, which is a Module II course, in January/February and May/June every year.  The fees is a consolidated sum of kshs.40,000.00 per annum (kshs.20,000.00 per semester).
