University of New South Wales - Confucius Institute

UNSW Confucius Institute
The UNSW Confucius Institute was formally opened in July 2009 and is based on the partnership between the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU), and supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education through the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). The UNSW Confucius Institute is a university-wide initiative located within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
The aim of the UNSW Confucius Institute is to reflect the diversity of Australia’s intellectual involvement with China across all disciplines of the University, and to make that accessible to the broader community. Through research and collaboration with SJTU and other key Chinese and international partners, through student and academic exchanges, through enhancing Chinese-language capacity in priority areas, and through strengthening the involvement of the business, professional and arts communities, priority will be given to strategies that will enhance public understanding of contemporary China.
Mandarin Chinese
Course Info.
Mandarin, the national language of China, is the most widely spoken language in the world. Over one billion people speak a form of Chinese as their native language. Currently, there is a worldwide demand for Chinese speakers that is far in excess of the number of Westerners who are able to speak the language. China is rapidly becoming a world economic power, having opened its doors to foreign investment, goods and services, trade and cultural exchange. With the 2010 World Expo set to capitalise on the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, there are many opportunities for businesses to forge enduring commercial relationships. People who speak Mandarin and are also conversant with the Chinese culture will be able to explore in great depth these future business and communication opportunities generated by China's continuing economic growth.
