![]() University of Oregon - Oregon Chinese Flagship Program Mandarin course:The East Asian Languages and Literature (EALL) and the Chinese Flagship program offer advanced Mandarin language learners honors-level courses through its multi-disciplinary Global Competency Curriculum. More than a language program, the integrated curriculum is designed to help students develop superior-level language skills while pursing degrees in the academic major of their choice. Learning Outcome Goals: graduate highly literate and articulate students with: Superior level Mandarin (ACTFL ILR 3) language proficiency, The academic and cross-cultural tools needed to successfully navigate U.S.-China relations in the 21st century, and Diverse academic and professional degrees, fully prepared for today’s global work environments. Instructional Model Flagship has worked with faculty from across campus to develop a well-articulated, dynamic, and sustainable four-year honors level curriculum for highly motivated students. The Global Competency Curriculum is a theme-based approach aimed at educating and engaging young adults preparing to become effective global professionals. Students take regular general education content courses from experts in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities, taught in Chinese. These content courses offer the theoretical perspectives of Thinking Globally and empirical studies toward our Global Response. Content courses present the learning foundations, issue dynamics, and opportunities facing Chinese countries and cultures and how those issues are framed within the larger context of U.S. and international relations. Each content course has a correlate Language Strategies course which reinforces both content and language learning through thorough examination of course readings, critical analysis and review of content course lectures, and literacy-building activities. Both content and language courses emphasize productive learning activities and academic debate, stressing international cooperation, collaboration, and action. The Flagship Program offers two content courses and two related language strategy courses each term. Students on scholarship take two courses per term during their freshman and sophomore years prior to going to China. To support students’ language needs, courses are divided into intermediate (ILR 1+) and advanced (ILR 2) clusters and students have a combination of options: Intensive language focus: intermediate language strategies + EALL upper-level language course Intermediate cluster: content and correlate intermediate language course, Advanced cluster: content course and correlate advanced language course, or Sophomores only: two content courses. By and large, students take eight credits per term and studying in Chinese Monday through Thursday in the classroom and meeting each Friday with a language coach to focus on writing and presentation skills.
