Why study Chinese?

Chinese language is the oldest language still being used nowadays. The Chinese speaking population is currently the largest in the world. It is the official language in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. It is also one of the official languages in the United Nations. In Australia, the Chinese population is one of the largest ethnic communities. Chinese language is an essential tool to interact with the Chinese people. It is also the key to the treasures of an 8000 years old civilization which can enrich our life in many ways.

In recent years China has played an increasingly active and significant role in world culture, economy, and politics and has established strong ties with Australia. Chinese language has become a key to the understanding of a new power rising in the Asia-Pacific region which can have significant influence in Australia’s future.

Students may study Chinese courses as electives in their degree, or complete a major or extended major in Chinese.

Chinese majors and extended majors can be undertaken by students from:

  • introductory level (no previous knowledge of Chinese)- stream A,
  • intermediate level  – stream B
  • post-secondary level (students who have studied Senior Chinese at school) - stream C,
  • advanced level (native, dialect or background speakers of Chinese) – stream D

Separate course starting points and pathways apply for students in each stream. Courses available in each stream are listed in the University’s Programs and Courses database.

Students who do not know their starting point (course) and stream should contact the coordinator of the Chinese program or the school office for advice.
