Tsai Course Description Chinese 1331, Elementary Mandarin Chinese I, is designed based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines) to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The semester is divided into 6 units. By the end of the semester, the students will be able to greet and respond to greetings; introduce and respond to introductions; ask and answer questions; exchange information and knowledge; express opinions, ideas, and emotions; follow directions; demonstrate ideas and familiar details; read, listen, and interpret signs, simple stories, and information texts; describe people, places, and things; write lists and short notes; and present information in brief reports. A learning environment will be created in the classroom through the usage of Chinese. Students will enjoy speaking, listening, reading and writing Chinese from various interactive activities.
