Chinese Program

Overview

With its ancient civilisation and current economic boom, China is one of the world’s most complex and compelling countries. Australia’s links to China are deep and critical to our economic and social future. Chinese offers unique intellectual challenges and life-changing opportunities as a degree major or a component of a degree program at the University of Tasmania.

The Chinese program in the School of Asian Languages and Studies provides a structured pathway though Chinese language learning and Chinese Studies. The introductory Chinese language units at the 1st year level cover written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin) and an introduction to Chinese society and history. 2nd year builds on the language skills established in first year, as well as offering a separate unit on Chinese society and culture. 3rd year language units are the highest level in the Chinese program, and the Chinese Studies units continue from 2nd year into specific specialisms, such as Chinese cinema, Taiwan, Chinese political economy and China's ethnic minorities.
