BA (Hons) in Chinese Studies [+ another subject]

There is no doubt that China will play an increasingly important role on the world stage during the 21st Century. Its current rates of growth and development mean that it is in the interest of the rest of the world to have a far better understanding of China and Chinese people in future. Yet it should not be forgotten that it is also a country that has made a significant contribution to world culture for centuries. This award will enable students to take the first steps towards that understanding, as well as to acquire a working knowledge level of the Mandarin Chinese language.

Structure of the Chinese Studies Half Award (provisional)

At level 1, you will take two 30-credit modules, Introduction to Contemporary China and Identity and Social Behaviour in China (incorporating Introduction to Chinese). These will enable you to gain an understanding of present-day China, the characteristics of Chinese culture and an introduction to the language.

At level 2, you will again take two 30-credit modules: China in the 20th Century and Language and Culture through the Arts (incorporating Continuing Study of Chinese). The aim is to enable you to understand the developments that led to the formation of the China of today, acquire a knowledge of Chinese culture, and further your ability in Mandarin Chinese.

Level 3 offers some choice of modules. All students will study Business in Contemporary Chinese Society (incorporating Further Study of Chinese), and will take an option from The Chinese Diaspora; China’s Relations with the World or a Chinese Studies Project.

You will also be encouraged to develop transferable skills in problem-solving, critical analysis, presentation and information technology, all of which are essential attributes in today’s employment market.

There is a growing demand from business and government for graduates with a knowledge of China and its principal language. It is clear, given the current and projected growth rates in the Chinese economy, that the employment prospects for such graduates are excellent.
