At all levels of this program you receive a systematic introduction to spoken and written Modern Standard Chinese. Speaking, reading and writing skills are equally emphasized, preparing you for work and travel. Aspects of Chinese culture are introduced for a deeper appreciation of the social context in which the language is used. This Level I course teaches Hanyu Pinyin for a clear grasp of the pronunciation of Chinese characters by means of its phonetic symbols. You learn approximately 100 Chinese characters and how to express yourself at a basic level. By course end, you will be able to participate in everyday situations such as using appropriate greetings, requesting and giving information, expressing likes and dislikes, giving opinions and relating present events.
