 University of Wales, Lampeter - Centre for Chinese Studies - Confucius Institute Established in 1997, the Centre for Chinese Studies at the University of Wales Lampeter, was originally intended to be a research facility providing opportunities for graduates, visiting scholars and staff members. Over years, the Centre for Chinese Studies has been facilitating the teaching and research in the area broadly defined as Chinese Studies, especially in terms of Chinese Culture, History, Media and Film, Philosophy and Religion. The Centre also promotes academic exchanges between the University of Wales Lampeter and Higher Education Institutions in China. In 2004, the Centre successfully launched a Joint Honours BA Degree in Chinese Studies. Modules offered include Chinese language, philosophy, religion, film and media, economics and business management. From 2005 to 2006, a fully development on Postgraduate Degree Studies was achieved by the Centre for Chinese Studies: MPhil and PhD in Comparative Studies started its student enrolment from 2005, and MA in Culture and Society: East and West from 2006. The Single Honours BA Degree in Chinese Studies was established in 2007, and the Centre is now the only place in Wales to offer both BA and MA degrees in Chinese Studies. As a young and vibrant unit in the foremost liberal arts university in Europe, the Centre for Chinese Studies is rapidly becoming a leading provider of quality courses in Chinese Studies in Wales. The University of Wales Lampeter has also become one of the recognised centres for this discipline in the UK.
Courses
The Confucius Institute offers weekday evening and Saturday morning classes in Chinese language (Mandarin) along with a varied programme of cultural classes, seminars, lectures and special events.

The Confucius Institute provides Chinese language teaching or Chinese Clubs in local schools in accordance with the demands of schools. In addition, we run hands-on Chinese Culture Workshops in which pupils can experience Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, dance, or the use of chopsticks first-hand.
Residential Programme in Chinese Language and Culture
The residential programme aims to introduce secondary school students to Chinese language and culture as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate or other qualifications. During the residential we offer lectures and workshop-type sessions on a variety of topics, for example:
Language and calligraphy
Chinese youth and youth culture
Food in China
Chinese religions
Contemporary society
Chinese history
Students also have the opportunity to participate in a typical Chinese social activity (Chinese-style dinner, karaoke, etc.). They experience Chinese social life first-hand and are encouraged to reflect on what it means to live in a foreign culture.
